Amplifier IC upgrades Wi-Fi performance
High linearity Wi-Fi power amp optimises transmission of greater datarates over longer distances, allowing systems to support emerging wireless multimedia applications.
To date, USI has integrated SiGe Semiconductor's SE2522L and SE2522BL power amplifiers into five platforms, including USI's recently announced dual-mode Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and 802.11b-only modules for handheld communication systems.
The companies are also collaborating on 802.11g-only and 802.11b/g systems, including PC cards, mini-PCI cards and PCMCIA cards designed for a variety of form factor and application requirements.
"SiGe Semiconductor's power amplifiers and design support have helped us to deliver the industry's best wireless connectivity solutions", said CY Wei, Corporate Senior Vice President and General Manager of USI's Communication Business Group.

Power amplifiers cut Wi-Fi costs
SiGe Semiconductor has released two new power amplifiers that provide manufacturers with the lowest cost route to developing Wi-Fi systems.
"Together we've maximised performance and reduced power consumption to enable WLAN capability in portable systems while minimising battery drain.
As a result, consumers will soon be able to experience improved service options and seamless mobile access".
USI pairs SiGe's power amplifiers with industry-leading WLAN chipsets in miniature system-in-package (SiP) modules that are ideal for portable applications including cellular handsets, personal digital assistants (PDAs), laptop computers and digital cameras.
SiGe Semiconductor's power amplifiers enable these devices to effectively support WLAN access by boosting power output while operating within very tight power budgets.
The SE2522L meets all adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) requirements delivering +20dBm power output while consuming just 110mA.
This translates to a 50% reduction in current consumption compared to alternative power amplifiers, allowing consumers to enjoy wireless transmission over longer distances without compromising battery life.
"The combination of our power amplifiers with USI's innovative packaging and manufacturing expertise sets new benchmarks for low power consumption and small size", said Alistair Manley, Director of Marketing, SiGe Semiconductor.
"Using these modules allows computing and communication device manufacturers to take advantage of the enormous growth opportunity in wireless networking by quickly and efficiently bringing a variety of Wi-Fi systems to market".
