GPS front end finds home in navigation design
GPS RF front end receiver IC is used in reference platform that provides manufacturers with a complete solution for multimedia navigation systems.
Shrinking Bluetooth power amplifiers
SiGe Semiconductor has expanded its family of Bluetooth Class 1 power amplifiers with the world's smallest solution and the world's smallest fully encapsulated package solution.
The new SE4110L retains the small form factor, low current and low BOM of SiGe's existing device and is the front end solution used in the high performance SiGe SE8901L GPS System.
The SE4110L is based on a proven architecture, incorporating a complete receive chain including the IF filter, a linear AGC amplifier, 2bit ADC, VCO, tank circuit, image reject mixer, PLL, LNA and low power reference oscillator in a compact, 4 x 4mm package.
The high integration of the SE4110L reduces the bill of materials, eliminating requirements for an external LNA and, in many applications, a SAW filter.

StreamCharger from SiGe is a silicon platform that enables the world's lowest power, most integrated downstream tuners for DOCSIS cable telephony equipment, cable modems and digital set-top boxes.
Cable tuner chip saves set-top box power budget
SiGe Semiconductor has delivered samples of its SE3020 cable tuner IC to Matsushita Electronic Components Co for integration into the next generation Panasonic tuner module.
This reduces system cost and form factor, while easing assembly, manufacture and test.
These benefits can be realised while also conserving battery life, as the SE4110L has a typical current draw of just 10mA from a 2.7-3.6V supply and a standby current of less than 10uA.
"The SE4110L solves the primary challenges associated with embedded GPS applications, including small size, low power, and low price - all while raising the bar for performance", said Stuart Strickland, Product Line Director at SiGe Semiconductor.
"As part of our long-term strategy, we are partnering with baseband manufacturers and software providers to facilitate system design and ensure that the PointCharger family of receivers becomes the obvious choice for cellular phone, PDA and software GPS applications".
The new SE4110L is designed to enhance performance with features including the on-chip switchable gain LNA that delivers a very low system noise figure of 2.5dB typical.
The device also features a multibit output, which increases sensitivity for software GPS applications and improves resistance to jamming and interference in challenging environments such as cellular phones.
Multiple reference frequencies are supported, allowing manufacturers to easily accommodate low-cost cellular phone reference frequency standards.
The SE4110L is sampling to customers now, with production scheduled for Q4 2005.
The device is supplied in a 24-pin QFN package.
