MOSFETs improve 12V-input converter efficiency
Two new 20V HEXFET power MOSFET families from International Rectifier are designed to increase efficiency by up to 4% in 12V-input DC/DC convertors.
Enabling the appliance industry to reduce energy consumption at a lower cost, the IRG4BC15UD and IRG4BC15UD-S deliver up to 5.5A or 1.1kW with a smaller silicon die than previously available devices with the same efficiency level.
In addition, IR is now offering its popular IRG4BC20UD in a D2Pak surface mountable version, the IRG4BC20UD-S, for power levels up to 1.3kW.
In appliance applications, motor drive designers increase frequency up to 20kHz to reduce the size and cost of passive components and to minimise undesirable audible noise.
The new ultra-fast Co-Pack IGBTs, which are capable of switching at speeds up to 20kHz, provide a low-cost alternative for higher frequency designs without compromising efficiency or overall performance.
The 600V IGBTs are co-packaged with HEXFRED ultrafast ultrasoft-recovery antiparallel diodes, which reduce or eliminate the need for snubber components and minimise switching losses, noise and EMI.
Specifically designed for the bridge configurations typically used in appliance motor drives, the Co-Pack IGBTs do not require negative biased turn-off drive, unlike other IGBTs on the market.
The IR devices can simplify drive circuits by eliminating the negative voltage power supply, and they allow the use of high-voltage gate-driver ICs such as the IR210x Series.
For design flexibility, or simplified replacement in existing designs, the IGBTs can also be used in negative-biased turn-off drive circuits.
