International Rectifier has released the IRPLCFL2, a complete reference design for compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) ballasts using the IR2156 integrated ballast control and gate driver IC The IR2156 offers high integration of protection and programmable features to eliminate 10 discrete components, thereby reducing manufacturing cost by as much as 25% and accelerating time-to-market compared to previous generation solutions

Replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps is one of the easiest ways to conserve electricity, as research shows that CFLs use 75% less energy than typical incandescent bulbs.

In addition, CFLs can last as long as 10kh, compared with common incandescent light bulbs that last approximately 750h.

The IR2156 device embeds a half-bridge ballast driver and timing circuits into one chip, together with core ballast protection functions including failure-to-strike, over-current, brownout and filament failure.

Features such as programmable preheat, ignition and run characteristics serve to minimise electrode wear and ensure reliable operation and longer lamp life.

Small enough for built-in CFL ballast applications, the IR2156 CFL ballast assembly is an alternative to inefficient, self-resonating bipolar CFL designs.

The IRPLCFL2 reference design provides a complete 42W, 110/220V AC compact fluorescent lamp ballast that can be programmed by means of simple component changes to accommodate different lamp types and operating voltages.

Available immediately, the reference design is supplied with a bill of materials, application note, PCB layout and silkscreen.

The reference design can be easily customised using IR's free ballast design software to calculate programming component values.

Ballast design software, datasheets and additional information are available on the International Rectifier website.
