MOSFETs improve 12V-input converter efficiency
Two new 20V HEXFET power MOSFET families from International Rectifier are designed to increase efficiency by up to 4% in 12V-input DC/DC convertors.
The IR2175 provides current feedback information and features a fast frequency output (130kHz) for higher bandwidth and faster acceleration needed for demanding servomotor applications such as high speed printing, packaging and machine tools, as well as automation including robotics and positioning stages.
The analogue stage chipset is the "bridge" between the IRMC0201 and IRMCO203 digital control engine and the power stage in the iMotion integrated design platform.
The new IR2175 is designed for 230V three-phase AC or brushless DC industrial drive applications.

Reference design simplifies high-efficiency PSUs
International Rectifier has released a reference design for its recently introduced IR1176 application-specific synchronous rectification IC (SRIC).
In addition, the IR2175 features built-in current sensing and protection circuits.
Motor drive circuits using the IR2175 eliminate external opto or Hall-effect sensors, reducing circuit size, simplifying design and increasing reliability.
David Tam, Vice President, Consumer and Industrial Sector Business said: "As a member of the iMotion platform, the IR2175 simplifies the way analogue motion control circuits handle current sensing and motor protection circuits".
The IR2175 has a 2.0us overcurrent shutdown feature with a wired-OR connection to communicate directly to the microprocessor or DSP.
Conventional linear current-sensing opto- or Hall-effect-based systems have typical shutdown times of 3-4us, and require two external comparators and a level-shift operational amplifier to achieve the same function.
In addition, as optocouplers age, the current transfer ratio (CTR) between the LED and receiving device degrades, causing system failure.
By eliminating optocouplers, the IR2175 retains high performance over time, increasing reliability.
The new device uses PWM output and runs off a bootstrap supply instead of a dedicated secondary supply to reduce size and parts count.
The new IR2175 comes in two industry-standard, compact package outlines: SO-8 and 8-pin DIP.
The IR2136 devices are made with three high-side mosfets and three low-side IGBT high voltage gate drivers with a range of protection functions, and are CMOS- or LSTTL-output compatible, to 3.3V logic for direct interface with a microcontroller or other logic devices and offer 120/250mA output source/sink current.
The IR2136 inverter/driver ICs enable robust designs with up to 50V/ns dV/dt immunity and low di/dt drive current for noise immunity.
The IR2136 has a deadtime as low as 250ns, and a typical turn-on/turn-off time of 400ns, to match the IR2175.
The output drivers feature a high pulse current buffer stage for minimum driver cross-conduction, and includes crossconduction prevention logic to eliminate short-circuit conditions.
Matched propagation delays for all six channels in the single IC package ensure consistent high frequency operation.
An overcurrent function terminates all six outputs.
An open-drain fault signal to the main controller indicates that an overcurrent or undervoltage shutdown has occurred.
The IR2136 devices are packaged in 28-lead DIP, 44-lead PLCC or 28-lead SOIC packages.
The new IR2175 and the IR2136 are available immediately.
Pricing is US $2.50 each in 10,000-unit quantities for the IR2175, and US $3.40 each for the IR2136 in 10,000-unit quantities.
