MOSFETs improve 12V-input converter efficiency
Two new 20V HEXFET power MOSFET families from International Rectifier are designed to increase efficiency by up to 4% in 12V-input DC/DC convertors.
The 16A-rated IRAMX16UP60A is designed for 750W to 1.2kW variable speed motor drive applications such as in-room air conditioners, commercial refrigerators and large capacity washers.
The new power modules are part of IR's iMotion family of integrated design platforms, incorporating a three-phase inverter power stage with gate drivers and auxiliary circuitry in a compact, high performance, isolated package.
The IRAMX16UP60A combines IR's low loss, non-punch-through (NPT) short-circuit-rated IGBT with a three-phase, high-voltage, high-speed driver IC and over 20 individual parts into a single unit.

Rad-hard MOSFETs protect and survive
With high radiation hardness and unparalleled single event effect (SEE) immunity, International Rectifier's new R5 MOSFETs are well suited for systems that must survive penetrating gamma rays.
The new module, plus a few external components and one microcontroller, enables a complete variable speed motor drive.
EMI emissions are minimised due to shorter connection routing, optimised component layout and internal shielding.
An open emitter configuration facilitates the implementation of several motor algorithms.
Using the IRAMX16UP60A PlugNDrive module enables multishunt current feedback for a sophisticated vector control loop, in V/Hz control loop, with no circuit layout limitation.
Alberto Guerra, Director, Integrated Power Module, Consumer and Industrial Business Unit at International Rectifier said: "PlugNDrive integrated power module technology is the ideal solution for variable speed appliance motors, since it is easy to implement, saves design time, decreases system cost and ultimately enables an energy-saving product".
The new SIP2 package used for the IRAMX16UP60A adds scalability to the PlugNDrive product family: the new IRAMX16UP60A is pin compatible and has the same length and assembly requirement as the smaller 10A version with 30% more current rating in a package less than 15% taller.
Therefore, higher-power motor drive circuits up to 1.2kW can be created, using the appropriate PlugNDrive module.
Built-in overtemperature and overcurrent protection and integrated undervoltage lockout functions deliver fail-safe operation.
Bootstrap diodes in the high-side driver section combine with the required single-polarity power supply to simplify circuits.
In addition, the IRAMX16UP60A includes a temperature monitor read-back signal and synchronised shut down function.
The new IRAMX16UP60A is available immediately.
Pricing is US $10.75 each for the IRAMX16UP60A in 10,000-unit quantities.
