High voltage rating for fast recovery diodes

An International Rectifier product story

The 60APU06 and 60EPU06 are platinum (Pt) diffused ultrafast-recovery epitaxial diodes each rated at 600V.

The platinum diffusion process accurately controls charge carrier lifetime.

The ability to set or adjust diode recovery (speed) characteristics enables optimised performance and efficiency.

Applications for the new diodes include output rectification in industrial switch mode power supplies.

These include high frequency and AC TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding machines in the 80 to 200A DC output range, where 600V devices are recommended due to voltage spikes.

In addition, the high blocking voltage characteristics expand the applications to include power factor correction circuits, uninterruptible power supplies, induction heaters, anti-parallel diodes in motor control and general-purpose diodes in any high frequency switching circuit.

Multiple diodes can be placed in parallel for higher current ratings.

IR's new diodes expand the company's discrete FRED Pt portfolio, which now includes devices with 200, 300, 400 and 600V blocking voltages, and 8 to 60A average current ratings at various speeds.

The new platinum devices have a 600V rating and a "soft" recovery current waveshape to reduce or eliminate the need for snubber components.

Forward voltage and recovery charge characteristics (trr 34ns) are optimised to allow high current operation at switching frequency above 50kHz.

Low forward voltage drop reduces conduction losses and low reverse recovery energy reduces switching losses.

All features combine to reduce power dissipation, operating temperature, size and weight, while increasing power supply efficiency and reliability.

A low thermal resistance (0.63K/W maximum) combined with a high allowable junction temperature (175C maximum) and a forward voltage of 1.42V results in a 60A current rating at 116C case temperature.
