LCD modules dash for automotive applications

A Sharp Microelectronics Europe product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Nov 26, 2004

Two new wide-angle TFT LCD modules feature the compact dimensions and wide operating temperature range demanded by automotive dashboard applications.

Sharp Microelectronics Europe is broadening its LCD portfolio with 7 and 8in TFT displays (LQ070Y5DR04 and LQ080Y5DR02) that are ideal for use as indicator modules in the automobile application arena.

They are set apart by their high image quality and temperature resistance.

Only 12 or 13mm deep, their space saving quality makes them the obvious choice for use in instrument clusters and entertainment system applications.

These modules can easily withstand the difficult working conditions present in vehicle applications.

A car exposed to the heat of the sun for an extended period can reach temperatures of 80C.

In addition, car hi-fi equipment and dashboard lighting generate heat.

These conditions leave the new displays completely unscathed.

They are able to function in temperatures ranging from -30 to +85C and resume their maximum brightness after a very short period of time, even after a cold start in winter.

Furthermore, the modules cope very well with shocks and vibrations.

The 7 and 8in TFTs are also unusually bright: their luminance of up to 500cd/m2 ensures optimal display clarity even in changing lighting conditions.

Their low reflection black matrix and low reflection polarisation ensure minimal screen glare.

The wide VGA 800 x 3 x 480 pixel display in RGB colour mode and 262,144 colours contribute to the LCDs' high image quality.

In vehicles, at least two viewers - driver and passenger - must be able to read the instrument cluster display.

The two new Sharp TFTs feature a wide viewing angle and come in the 15:9 "wide-screen" image format, enabling perfect viewing from both sides.

Prototypes of the new LQ070Y5DR04 and LQ080Y5DR02 TFT displays are available now for the European market.
