Transflective TFTs bring TV technology
to industry
Industrial TFT displays are easy to read even in changing lighting conditions.
New from Sharp at Electronica, the LQ121S7LY11 and LQ121S7LY01 are 12.1in industrial TFT displays that are easy to read even in changing lighting conditions Both displays are based on the structure of the Strong Displays but also feature transflective technology, which Sharp originally developed for the automotive sector and has used successfully in other equipment such as mobile telephones

Sharp's next-generation high-performance 32bit smart card incorporates 1Mbyte of Flash memory.
Faster access for high-density Flash
Sharp Microelectronics Europe reckons its latest high-speed 128Mbit Flash memory features the fastest access time available to date.
This technology combines the basic design of a reflective TFT with the brightness of a backlit transmissive TFT.
In this design, part of the internal structure of the display is covered with a reflective material.
This guarantees very clear image reproduction even in direct sunshine, whilst the active background ensures good readability in a darker environment.
Powerful long-life CCFL tubes provide a display brightness of up to 300cd/m2 with a service life of at least 50,000 hours in continuous operation.
By comparison, to date standard backlights have only been able to achieve half-life periods of 25,000 to 40,000 hours.
In addition, users of the new industrial displays benefit from Sharp's knowhow in the areas of TV LCD panels and different mobile applications: thanks to Advanced Super View (ASV) technology, the transflective TFT LCDs offer an extremely wide viewing angle of 160 degrees in all directions.
This is particularly important for industrial advertising displays as they have to be perfectly readable from every direction.
The new transflective TFTs are particularly suitable for all areas that require good readability even under sharply fluctuating lighting conditions.
Typical areas of application include mobile measuring and diagnostic equipment for medicine, industry and environmental analysis, industrial vehicles and control units for factory systems.
Samples of the two 12.1in transflective industrial displays are already available via Sharp sales offices and distribution partners worldwide.
Series production of the 12.1in LCD is scheduled to start in Q1 2007.
The company plans to add 10.4 and 15.0in versions to the transflective industrial lineup in 2007.
