A novel online calculation and simulation tool allows designers to easily identify the optimum power semiconductor for their power control applications.

Semikron has released details of its SemiSel online calculation and simulation tool that allows designers to easily identify the optimum power semiconductor for their power control applications On the basis of customer-specific details, SemiSel calculates losses and temperature increase online, to provide an assessment of the thermal load placed on selected components

A choice can be made from 12 of the most widely used power electronics switches.

To use SemiSel, the designer first selects the type of circuit for the application.

These are sorted into four basic types of circuits, rectifier (AC/DC), inverter (DC/AC), DC controller (DC/DC) and AC controller (AC/AC).

Connecting diagrams support this selection.

Parameters for the circuit are then input interactively under three headings: circuit details - for frequencies, currents, voltages and load cycles; component - for case style and type; and cooling conditions - for heatsinks and cooling media.

All user inputs are verified for feasibility.

The last parameter input can be saved.

Filters and preset values support the user in making the correct selection of a suitable component.

Calculations are carried out for both static and dynamic load conditions - directly on the Internet page.

The results are shown in just a few seconds.

Results are presented to the user in the form of a report with the circuit and device parameters used for the calculation, details on static losses and temperatures, as well as a graphic display of the calculation for dynamic processes.

SemiSel improves the degree of certainty that the correct power semiconductor has been selected.

It allows comparisons to be made quickly between various components and work points and for these results to be verified.
