Engineers looking to implement USB 2.0 peripherals can get a quick start with a new development kit from Silicon Concepts The NetChip Technology NET2270PCI-RDK kit from Silicon Concepts includes example drivers and firmware, complete with source code to save design effort and shorten time to market

The development kit creates a comprehensive USB firmware development platform on a Windows PC, which allows almost any USB device to be emulated.

Software can be developed quickly using the familiar Visual C++ programming language within Microsoft Windows environment.

A PCI host bus interface board, device development card populated with a NET2270 peripheral USB 2.0 controller, and a CD-ROM containing USB host and USB device programs for Windows, as well as example source code, application notes and schematics are included in the kit.

The host source code includes USB client driver and USB monitor applications, while device source code includes loopback firmware, transfer firmware, device register monitor application and Windows and PCI abstraction driver.

By including these software tools, the NET2270PCI-RDK can save 3 to 6 months from the normal development time for a USB device.

The device development card includes the connector to the PCI board, USB 'B' connector and header pins, as well as the NetChip NET2270 peripheral USB interface chip.

The NET2270 is the world's first USB 2.0 High Speed logo certified peripheral controller.

The PCI host bus interface board includes a PLX 9054 PCI to local bus bridge chip, connector for the NetChip device development card, and header pins enabling all NetChip local bus device signals to be probed.

The device development card is supplied already mounted on the PCI board.

Development cards can be remounted and 'wire-wrapped' to an existing system board if required, and extra development cards can be purchased separately.

Using the NET2270PCI-RDK designers can gain familiarity with NetChip's peripheral chip register set using provided register monitor software, and run pre-compiled firmware examples to experiment with USB transfers.

The firmware runs on a Windows PC as a standard console application.

The examples provided can be recompiled, tested and modified to suit development requirements, and delivered to host driver and applications development team even before hardware is ready.

MSVC or other Windows debugging tools are supported, including debugging features such as breakpoints, single-step and trace.

The firmware may be moved from the development kit to a hardware platform easily and at any time.

Robust USB host drivers and applications for low level control over USB devices are also provided.
