SMART Modular Technologies has announced the availability of unbuffered 200-pin double data rate small outline dual in-line memory modules (DDR SO-DIMMs).

SMART's latest addition to its emerging DDR DIMM product family has data transfer rates of 200 or 266MHz with densities ranging from 64 to 256Mbyte.

The 200-pin DDR small outline module uses the rising and falling edges of the memory clock, thereby doubling current data transfer bandwidth of 100/133MHz SDRAM modules.

The narrow, low profile module (it measures just 2.67 x 1.25in) is specifically designed for mobile and space-constrained computing and networking environments.

Current production densities and configurations range from 64Mbyte (8 x 64) to 256Mbyte (32 x 64).

SMART plans on ramping 512Mbyte (64 x 64) modules by spring 2001.

Most next-generation notebooks are expected to feature processors that support low profile DDR SDRAM and SDR SDRAM SO-DIMMs.

"With strong next-generation notebook growth expected for the end of this year and into next year, we see SMART playing a key role in supporting DDR SO-DIMM memory requirements for these systems", stated Bill Gervase, chairman of the memory timing subcommittee for JEDEC, the semiconductor engineering standardisation body.

"By broadening its product offering of small form factor DDR modules, SMART further facilitates the advancement of high-performance mobile computing and networking systems".

The continuous drive for thinner, ultra-compact, high-performance web switching and routing equipment is also fueling the demand for DDR SO-DIMMs.

More telecomms and networking OEMs are seeking high-performance, small-factor modules that fulfill tight 1U space limitations.

With a doubled data transfer rate and a small outline form factor, DDR SO-DIMMs provide an ideal memory solution for fast-growing web switching applications.
