SMART Modular Technologies has added a 4-pin integrated voltage switching regulator module, to its expanding product family of low-voltage power convertors.

The new voltage regulator modules (VRMs) provide a compact, low-cost, efficient, accurate and reliable switching regulator solution designed to meet the requirements of emerging high-current low-output-voltage applications.

SMART's SMV202TM07D Series VRMs use ICs with integrated switching regulator technology, created by Volterra Semiconductor, to transfer input ranges from 3.3 to 5V to output ranges of 0.7-3.6V at 7A.

Built onto a 4-pin surface mount module, SMART's low-voltage switching regulator may lower system design costs by reducing the need for expensive DC/DC brick-type regulators and reducing the overall component count.

SMART's VRMs support a wide range of low output voltages to drive multiple subsystems without the need for redesigning the central power supply, and are designed to address the industry's need to provide multiple output voltages from a single source.

The new SMV202TM07D Series modules are nonisolated high-performance DC/DC convertors designed to power advanced DSPs, FPGAs, ASICs and processors.

These modules allow approximately a two- to tenfold reduction in output capacitance due to the high switching frequency.

This feature also enables the use of multilayer ceramic capacitors (rather than electrolytic or tantalum components), which use less board space and are better suited for higher frequency power supplies.

The result is a voltage regulation system that is designed to offer OEMs a reliable and compact solution at a lower cost.

In addition to telecomms, datacomms and networking infrastructures, SMART's lineup of VRM products is used in applications such as set-top boxes, PC peripherals, embedded and multiprocessor DSP systems and industrial equipment.
