The Si3054 and Si3024 dual-interface silicon direct access arrangements are the industry's first DAAs to configure automatically to either AC97 or the new Intel High Definition Audio interface.

The Si3054 and Si3024 are dual interface silicon direct access arrangements (DAAs), and are claimed as the industry's first DAAs to configure automatically to either an AC97 interface or the new Intel High Definition Audio interface Silicon Laboratories' new Si3054 and Si3024 DAAs are fully hardware and pin compatible with the company's industry-leading AC97 solutions allowing customers to immediately support High Definition Audio without changing the schematic, layout or bill-of-materials (BOM) of existing AC97 modem cards

Silicon Laboratories' unique autodetect feature recognises the AC97 and High Definition Audio interface and configures the DAA accordingly allowing customers to implement a single global modem layout or printed circuit board (PCB) daughtercard independent of the core logic used in the system.

The dual interface and autodetect capabilities enable existing qualified modems to support new High Definition Audio products while continuing to support their existing high-volume AC97 platforms.

When combined with the already proven global compliance of Silicon Laboratories' DAAs, the Si3054 and Si3024 devices allow one hardware design to meet all major standards and interoperate with any x86 motherboard.

The result is a low-cost, backward-compatible solution that can significantly reduce engineering and PTT compliance costs, while easing the design and manufacturing process.

"Silicon Laboratories worked closely with Intel during the development and introduction of High Definition Audio.

Our unique autodetect feature offers our customers unparalleled flexibility by taking the risk and complexity out of supporting products with legacy and new core logic standards.

Our customers will now have the ability to migrate to High Definition Audio while still supporting AC97 products with a single modem SKU", said Dave Bresemann, Vice President of Silicon Laboratories.

"This value-added feature, combined with our high level of integration, global compliance and field experience, furthers Silicon Laboratories' leadership in silicon DAAs".

With nearly 100 patents issued or filed on its DAA technology, Silicon Laboratories' latest DAAs reduce required board space by 75% and component count by 50%.

Both the Si3054 and Si3024 DAA chipsets eliminate the need for an analogue front end, an isolation transformer, relays, optoisolators and a two- to four-wire hybrid.

Silicon Laboratories' DAAs are globally programmable to meet global telephone line standards including FCC, TBR21, JATE, and country-specific PTTs and safety and emissions requirements.

The Si3054 and Si3024 are global DAA chipsets including a system-side and a line-side device packaged in low-profile 16-pin SOIC or TSSOP packages.

The Si3054 chipset is available now in an SOIC package for $4.12 in quantities of 10,000.

The Si3024 chipset is also available now for $3.89 in quantities of 10,000.
