LED driver powers LCD backlights
Low-side LED driver is ideal for powering small and mid-size LCD modules that use LEDs for backlighting.
Available now from Sipex Corp, the SP7616 is a four-channel low-side LED driver designed to drive LEDs in series from input voltages as high as 30V.
Expanding Sipex's existing LED driver portfolio, the SP7616 is ideal for powering small and mid-size LCD modules that use LEDs for backlighting.
The SP7616 employs a minimum amount of external components to simplify board design and minimise system cost.
The SP7616 is capable of powering up to four LED strings of nine LEDs at 60mA per string for a total of 36 LEDs.
The desired LED current can be adjusted with only one external resistor, and the precision string-to-string current matching ensures consistent colour temperature across the whole display.
The device also features very low dropout voltage (100mV at 20mA) to maximise system efficiency and avoid difficult thermal design requirements.
Brightness can be adjusted by employing a PWM dimming scheme.
PWM dimming allows brightness control without unwanted colour shifts.
Additionally, the SP7616 features built-in thermal protection which automatically adjusts LED current to prevent overheating.
The SP7616 is available in a tiny 2 x 3mm 8-pin DFN package.
"Current accuracy and efficiency are very important to LED backlighting applications", said Jason Lu, Sr Technical Marketing Manager.
"Sipex is committed to provide quality LED driver solutions like the SP7616 which designers can use to develop highly reliable, LED based backlight solutions".
The SP7616 operates from -40 to +85C.
Samples are available now, and pricing begins at US $1.00 in 1000-piece quantities.
