Transceivers for Profibus field bus
Profibus transceiver has hot-swap capability and is designed for high-density industrial control networks.
Sipex has announced its first Profibus transceiver, the SP1486E.
Created in 1989 by a consortium of companies and institutions, Profibus (Process Field Bus) is a popular fieldbus and is now a mature, proven technology for supporting modern automation systems.
With over 14 million installed devices, Profibus is a significant interface specification for industrial applications.
"Profibus presents an exciting opportunity for us, and is the first step toward leveraging our strengths in RS485 to expand into new Interface markets", says Rich Kapusta, Vice President for Sipex's Interface Products Group.
Sipex's SP1486E is designed for high-density industrial control networks.
The device's 1/8th load capability allows up to 256 transceivers on the communication bus without violating the Profibus specification.
The hot-swap capability does not require a shutdown of the entire system for each board insertion and removal.
The advanced failsafe protection minimises noise, parasitic coupling, and can prevent the CMOS inputs from drifting to improper logic levels when the receiver inputs are floating, shorted or open.
The device also complies with TIA/EIA-485, TIA/EIA-422, IEC61000-4-2 air gap(+/-15kV) and contact discharge (+/-8kV) standards.
The SP1486E is a half-duplex differential line transceiver suitable for high speed bidirectional communication on multipoint bus transmission lines.
It has a 2.7V differential output voltage that allows robust data transmission over longer distances than standard RS-485 transceivers.
Additionally, the SP1486E provides a fast 20Mbit/s data rate, suitable for many Profibus applications including advanced fieldbus networks, security networks, robotic manufacturing plants, and industrial process control with remote sensing and metering.
Offered in the industrial or the extended temperature ranges, the SP1486E is available in RoHS/lead-free 8-pin narrow SOIC packages.
Devices are priced at US $1.25 in 1,000 piece quantities.
