The first in a series of DSP-based motor controllers for brushless motors makes its UK debut at the Power Electronics Exhibition where Solid State Supplies will show its SOM9300 motor control kit designed for use with permanent magnet synchronous machines A combination of the advanced packaging of power electronics and modern DSP based control algorithms, the SOM9300's integration with a brushless motor provides a cost effective control solution with a high degree of reliability in a unit which is both electrically and acoustically quieter than alternative drives

Using one of two control algorithms - Hall-effect sensor feedback trapezoidal drive and sensorless extended Kalman estimator (EKE) sinusoidal drive - the SOM9300 also features direction control, cycle-by-cycle current limit, torque control for fast response to electrical disturbance and velocity output feedback.

The control and interface board with DSP, voltage and current sensor and an isolated RS232 interface and and integrated power module are fitted to a standard heatsink and then connected to the motor.

The control board uses an ADMC331 single chip motor DSP and the power module houses a three-phase PWM inverter and high/low side drivers.

Supplied with all connections and software, the SOM9300 requires a 28V/5A supply, a power supply for RS232 (isolated +5V logic) and a PC with Windows 95/98, a CD ROM drive, 3.5in floppy drive and an RS232 COM port.
