The MIC4685 is a buck switching regulator which achieves 3A of continuous current with a power conversion efficiency of more than 85%.

Designed as a 7-lead SPAK package, the new MIC4685 from Solid State Supplies is a buck switching regulator which achieves 3A of continuous current with a power conversion efficiency of more than 85%.

The thermal efficiency of the 200kHz device is good enough to replace TO-220s and D2PAKs in many applications.

The 2mm profiled SPAK also has a footprint which is 36% smaller than the TO-263.

Boasting a wide input voltage range of 4 to 30V (34V transient), the MIC4685 maintains its high efficiency over a wide output current range by using a boost capacitor to increase the voltage available to saturate the internal power switch.

This high degree of thermal management results in only the ground plane of the PCB being required as a heatsink.

The output voltage is also adjustable to 1.235V.

Suitable for use in applications where input voltage transients may be present, the MIC4685 uses several safety features which include overcurrent protection, frequency foldback short circuit protection and thermal shutdown.
