SanDisk Corp has entered volume production of the world's smallest removable Flash memory storage format Approximately one quarter of the volume of the smallest conventional removable Flash card, SanDisk TransFlash targets the new generation of mobile products that combine compactness with advanced storage-intensive multimedia applications such as still picture and video capture and playback, MP3 players, video games, personal organisers, Multimedia Message Service (MMS), and e-mail capabilities

Realised using advanced packaging technology and SanDisk's latest NAND MLC Flash memory and controller technologies, TransFlash measures just 11 x 15 x 1mm but offers capacities of 32, 64 anf 128Mbyte today, with a 256Kbyte TransFlash device scheduled to become available in Q4 2004.
TransFlash enables manufacturers to incorporate significant and variable amounts of removable storage capacity into their mobile applications, without changing the physical size of the product.
TransFlash also offers the manufacturer the ability to ship products with the smallest amount of embedded Flash memory required for basic operation, leaving the customer to decide, at point of sale, or later, how much additional Flash memory he/she needs for the storage of personal content - a facility simply not possible with embedded Flash memory.
A range of TransFlash connectors are available that support external slots as well as "under-the-battery" placement.
Existing SD card users are catered for by a TransFlash/SD adapter, which provides interoperability with standard SD devices, enabling the exchange of data between any TransFlash-equipped device and any SD compatible host, such as a digital camera, PDA or laptop PC.
Due to its ability to store operating system code and system data, TransFlash also offers manufacturers and network operators the flexibility to offer customised memory configurations, additional software and applications revisions and quick and easy field replacement or upgrades.
