Low-voltage operation puts Flash in the hand
Sunrise Electronics has a new family of dual-operation Flash memory devices optimised for high performance in ultra-low-power mobile applications.
Sunrise Electronics has a new family of dual-operation Flash memory devices optimised for high performance in ultra-low-power mobile applications such as cellular phones, PDAs and other portable terminals.
Two new 64Mbit devices known as uPD29F064115 and uPD29F064215 feature the lowest operating voltages available for Flash memory.
Both types are organised in 142 sectors.
Sectors of this memory can be erased at low voltage (1.65 to 1.95V) supplied from a single power source, or the contents of the entire chip can be erased.
The uPD29F064115 is organized as 4K x 16bit, so that memory can be programmed in word-wide units.
The uPD29F064215 supports two modes of memory organisation, byte mode (8K x 8bit) and word mode (4K x 16bit), selectable so that the memory can be programmed in byte or word units.
Both types can be read can be read at high speed with page mode.
Because these Flash memory parts can be electrically erased or programmed by writing an instruction, data can be reprogrammed on-board after the flash memory has been installed in a system, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Once a program or erase command sequence has been executed, an automatic program or automatic erase function internally executes program or erase and verification.
The programming time is about 0.5s/sector.
The erase time is less than 1s/sector.
A feature of these devices is that they can be read while the contents are being erased or programmed.
The memory array is divided into four banks of 8, 24, 24 and 8Mbit.
While sectors in any bank are erased or programmed, simultaneous execution architecture allows data to be read from the other three banks.
As this family of parts enables the boot sector to be erased, it is also ideal for storing a boot program.
In addition, program code that controls the flash memory can also be stored, and the program code can be programmed or erased without the need to load it into RAM.
16 small sectors for storing parameters are provided, each of which can be erased in 8Kbyte units.
The uPD29F064115 has a separate 1.8V I/O power supply pin (Vccq) and 3V power supply pin (Vcc), for systems with 3V databuses.
The uPD29F064215 operates at single 1.8V power supply.
Both types are available packaged in 48-pin plastic TSOP, 63-pin tape FBGA and 85-pin tape FBGA options.
These complement existing 32Mbit parts available in configurations of 4M x 8 and 2M x 16bit offered in 48-pin TSOP or 63-pin FBGA.
