Sunrise Electronics has a new low-cost microcontroller in NEC's successful low-power 78K0S family that offers larger memory sizes as well as a wealth of on-chip features.

In addition to an efficient 8bit CPU, the uPD789088 microcontroller also incorporates a variety of hardware features including I/O ports, timers, a serial interface, and interrupt control.

A Flash memory version, the uPD78F9088 and a range of development tools are also available now.

A key feature of the uPDPD789088 is the largest on-chip memory size in its class, with 32Kbyte of ROM plus 320byte of high-speed RAM and a further 256byte of slow-speed RAM onboard.

The F version has 32Kbyte of on-chip Flash memory in place of the ROM, and is fully pin compatible with the mask ROM device except for the provision of a programming voltage pin.

Minimum instruction execution time for devices in this family can be changed to high-speed (0.4us), medium-speed (0.8us), and low speed (1.6us) when operating with a 5.0MHz system clock, and a standard voltage supply in the range 2.7 to 5.5V.

Onboard features include 24 I/O ports, a serial interface, switchable between three-wire serial I/O and UART modes, five timers (one 16bit, three channels of 8bit timers and a watchdog) plus a key return signal detector and on-chip power-on-clear circuit and low-voltage detector.

These devices are ideal for low power applications such as remote controllers, compact electrical appliances, instruments, and so on, and will operate from a voltage supply down to 1.8V.

Both types are available now from Sunrise, packaged in the latest 30-pin plastic SSOP outlines with a 300-micron pitch for surface mounting.
