Debut for scalable microcontroller family

Sunrise Electronics has the first group of devices from NEC's new K_Line microcontroller family.
Developed to provide a high level of design flexibility and extreme scalability in a broad range of industrial, automotive, telecommunication and consumer applications, the K_Line will include both 8 and 32bit devices in mask programmable and Flash memory options.
Designers will be able to easily upgrade designs to other family members if an application demands more resources than originally planned.
The first group of devices available are the 78K0/KB1 series based on, and retaining compatibility with, NEC's successful 78K0 family.
The KB1 series features a wealth of new peripherals whilst at the same time offering the advantage of high scalability associated with this new family.
78K0/KB1 devices include on-chip oscillator, clock monitor, power-on clear (POC/POR) and LIN-capable UART.
The 78K0/KB1 is available either with mask ROM or Flash memory.
Extended temperature range from -40 up to +125C will be available in mask options.
78K0/KB1 devices are based on an 8bit CISC CPU core, with hard-wired instructions for bit manipulation, multiplication and division.
The maximum crystal oscillator frequency is 10MHz (equivalent to a 200ns minimum instruction cycle time).
The onboard oscillator (typically 240kHz), provides fast start up or recovery from power down modes.
Onboard resources also include a four-channel A/D convertor with 10bit resolution, three 8bit timers, one 16bit timer, watchdog timer and 22 I/Os.
It also provides a three-wire serial interface (CSI), standard and advanced UART options (highly flexible, including support for LIN by hardware) and monitoring of clock and low voltage.
All devices in the family operate from a supply voltage in the range 2.7 to 5.5V.
Package styles are 30-pin SSOP.
Samples, development tools and full documentation are available now from Sunrise Electronics.
