A family of optocouplers with a new-style package from NEC is claimed to be the smallest in the world.

NEC's PS29 series optocouplers are housed in a "mini-flat" package and offer considerable saving of space on the PCB, even when compared with couplers in the current "super small outline package" (SSOP) used by NEC's PS28 series.

The new mini-flat package has the same 1.27mm pin-to-pin distance as an SSOP.

However, the pins of the couplers in mini-flat package are bent very close to the package, saving 30% mounting space.

The package measures just 2.5 x 4.6mm and has a height of 2.1mm.

Devices in this family have an isolation voltage of 2500V and an internal isolation distance of 0.4mm, fully meeting the requirements of BS/EN60950 and IEC950.

Various international safety certificates are available.

Several devices are available in the PS29 series.

The PS2911-1 has DC input, and transistor output with a 40V collector-emitter voltage.

The PS2913-1 is similar but rated at 120V collector-emitter voltage.

PS2915-1 is designed for AC input and has a transistor output rated at 40V collector-emitter voltage.

Two more versions, the PS2932-1 and PS2933-1 have DC inputs with Darlington-transistor outputs rated at 300 and 350V collector-emitter voltage, respectively.

The PS29 series couplers are ideal devices for power packs and industrial control systems as well as for applications in the telecommunications and consumer sector.

Typical applications include DC/DC convertors, modems and PC cards as well as telephones.

Each coupler can be ordered in two versions.

The PS29xx-1 series is for soldering with lead, whereas the PS29xx-1-A series is the right choice for lead-free soldering.
