Transverter offers easy switch from 2.4
to 5.8GHz
Enables OEMs to adapt existing products for operation in the 5.8GHz ISM band, including digital cordless phones and custom wireless data systems such as streaming audio and video appliances.
The ML5825 frequency transverter from RF Micro Devices is designed to upconvert transmitted 2.4GHz signals to 5.8GHz and downconvert received 5.8GHz signals to 2.4GHz, and is specifically optimised for streaming video applications The addition of this frequency translation functionality to a pre-existing 2.4GHz ISM band radio allows original equipment manufacturers to quickly bring to market products for operation in the 5.8GHz ISM band, including digital cordless phones and custom wireless data systems such as streaming audio and video appliances

Bluetooth radio processor aims for sub-$4 BoM
The single-chip UltimateBlue 3000 radio processor delivers the proven high-performance capabilities of previous Silicon Wave Bluetooth products on a low-cost 0.18-micron CMOS process.
Bluetooth devices available as known good die
The UltimateBlue 3000 radio processor and the SiW1712 radio modem are now available as stand-alone bare die products.
The ML5825 incorporates, on a single die, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), phase locked loop (PLL)-based synthesiser, low noise amplifier (LNA), receive and transmit bandpass filtering and mixers, and a transmit predriver.
By offering a digitally controlled 18dB gain step, the ML5825 allows radio designers to optimise third order input intercept point (IIP3) performance and noise figure based on specific application needs.
Additionally, the ML5825 offers a low-power standby mode of 10uA to minimise average power consumption, leading to longer battery life in portable applications.
According to Alastair Upton, General Manager of RFMD's Broadband and Consumer Business Unit: "The movement of many data communications systems to the 5.8GHz ISM band presents an opportunity to leverage the existing system design knowhow accumulated from 2.4GHz products".
"The ML5825 gives OEMs the ability to rapidly bring new 5.8GHz products to market with low risk and a reduced total cost of implementation".
Technical features of the ML5825 include: an input voltage from 2.8 to 3.6V; selectable transmit output power; 4dB noise figure in high-gain mode; -14dBm IIP3 in low-gain mode; and integrated VCO/PLL spurious content -60dBc or better.
The ML5825 is packaged in a 4 x 5 x 0.9 mm, 28-pin QFN package and is priced at US $1.46 each, in quantities of 10,000 units with samples available immediately.
