Nonisolated SIP convertors boost efficiency

A SynQor Europe product story

The NiQor series of DC/DC convertors can deliver up to 20A of total output current in an industry standard single-inline package.

NiQor series DC/DC convertors can deliver up to 20A of total output current in an industry standard single-inline package.

The new line of nonisolated point-of-load convertors represents SynQor expanding product line for distributed power applications.

The first modules introduced in the NiQor nonisolated line have a 3.0-5.5V input range and deliver up to 20A at 3.3, 2.5, 1.8, 1.5, 1.2 and 0.9V.

Employing the industry standard SIP, the units measure 50.8 x 14 x 8.5mm, and can be configured in either vertical or horizontal orientations.

The NiQor family will quickly expand to include a 12V input series (9.6 to 13.2V range) that can deliver up to 15A at 5.0, 3.3, 2.5, 1.8, 1.5, 1.2 and 0.9V.

The modules employ synchronous rectification to achieve ultra high efficiencies of 92% at full load (3.3V output), allowing full power with no derating at elevated ambient conditions.

On board input and output filtering keeps input ripple currents and output noise to a minimum, eliminating the need to add expensive I/O capacitors.

The nonisolated NiQor series offer point-of-load power processing for a variety of low-voltage core logics required from today's advanced DSPs and ASICs.

Combined with SynQor's 12V BusQor DC transformer, power designers can implement a true intermediate bus architecture (IBA).

Supplying power to an array of low-voltage loads can be accomplished most economically with one point of isolation from an intermediate bus.

The NiQor series then allows point-of-load power from the isolated high current bus for as little as $1/A.

"Our performance leading NiQor series opens up new markets for SynQor while offering existing customers a broader array of power solutions", says Dr Martin Schlecht, SynQor CEO.

"Customers can trust they will find the same high levels of performance, quality and reliability in our nonisolated units as they find our award-winning isolated convertors".

The NiQor convertors include a full complement of control and protection features such as on/off control, input undervoltage lockout, current limit, short circuit, output overvoltage protection and thermal shutdown.

Optional features include a current share pin for high current requirements, remote sense and a power good signal.

These features allow advanced functionality, while standard safety certifications allow easy integration into the end user's product.

Sample quantities of the NiQor convertors will be available in December 2002 and production volume shipments will begin in Q1 2003 directly from SynQor and through its network of distributors.

The NiQor series is currently offered with through-hole mounting (vertical and horizontal configurations) and will also be available in a surface-mount version in Q1 2003.

The modules are priced from $15.00 to $19.00 in OEM quantities.
