Half bricks aim for high-current applications

A new line of high-current high-efficiency half-brick DC/DC convertors can deliver up to 100A output current in a single-board open-frame package.

The Peta series convertors use synchronous rectification and SynQor's patented topology to achieve extremely high efficiency (90% for 1.5V output at 50A, 84% at 100A).

The PowerQor Peta half-brick line includes output voltages of 1.2V (100A), 1.5V (100A) and 1.8V (80A).

All units draw power from a 48V nominal input (35 to 75V) and employ the established industry standard half-brick footprint, measuring 61 x 58.4 x 11.4mm.

The optional active current sharing feature allows for parallel operation to achieve higher power levels and N+1 redundancy for hot swap applications.

The 100A Peta series extends SynQor's award-winning line of Kilo, Mega, Giga and Tera half-brick, quarter-brick and eighth-brick modules to offer the most extensive choice of high-efficiency convertors from 15 to 100A to suit any power application.

The high current Peta half-brick modules are ideal for telecomms and datacomms applications using distributed power architectures.

High-end optical networking equipment such as backbone switches and petabit routers are just some products that require higher currents at increasingly lower voltages to power today's complex electronic circuitry.

SynQor is meeting these challenges by increasing efficiency and power density while eliminating the need for a heatsink.

Due to the high levels of current capacity, SynQor's 80-100A half-bricks incorporate two additional output power pins.

Several manufacturers have offered various designs for pin locations on high current half-brick modules but no accepted industry standard exists.

SynQor has studied this issue extensively and has developed a design in which each pin is located just outside and inline of the established power pin locations.

More importantly, SynQor uses opposite polarity for each pair of power pins.

The SynQor design provides dramatically lower spreading of resistance on the customer's load board, leading to a 10x reduction in the inductance of connection.

The improvement allows the module to exhibit better transient response, lower output ripple and improved current sharing.

Sample quantities of the 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8V convertors are available immediately and production volume shipments are available with a six week lead time.

Additional output voltages of 2.5 and 3.3V will be available in Q4 2003.

The modules are priced at $90.60 in OEM quantities.
