Grantmaker award is recognition for philanthropy

Synopsys has been awarded the Outstanding Corporate Grantmaker Award for 2002 by the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

Synopsys has been awarded the Outstanding Corporate Grantmaker Award for 2002 by the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

AFP is the largest association of charitable fundraisers in the world.

The awards will be distributed today, as part of Philanthropy Day, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California.

AFP honours an outstanding corporation each year in recognition of an unparalleled contribution to the community.

The Outstanding Corporate Grantmaker award highlights the direct impact that the company's philanthropic dedication has had on the programs and individuals it serves through financial contributions, leadership and a sense of social responsibility.

"An important Synopsys goal is to help inspire the next generation of technology leaders by supporting a broad range of education and science programs.

By working with non-profits, schools, government, business and the community-at-large, Synopsys has seen that it can make a difference in the lives of others", said Ron May, Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications at Synopsys.

"During fiscal year 2001, Synopsys partnered with 70 organisations around the world, led multiple employee giving drives, participated in more than 50 volunteer events, and continued its year-round matching gift programme".

Synopsys was nominated for the AFP award by the East Side Union High School District and the Santa Clara County AIDS Coalition (Walk for AIDS).

Supporting nominations came from City Year San Jose Silicon Valley, Contact Cares, Ecology Action, Environmental Volunteers, Friends of Stevens Creek Trail, Mountain View Central Business Association, Mountain View High School, Palo Alto Area Red Cross, Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley, Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, and San Jose State University.

Since 1992, Synopsys has been active in Silicon Valley and other communities as a provider of corporate donations, a facilitator of employee volunteerism and a supporter of employee-giving campaigns.

In fiscal year 2001, Synopsys pledged $1.4 million to non-profit programmes in communities worldwide.

In addition, Synopsys maintains an active computer donation programme and works with more than 400 universities around the world to provide electronic design automation software for educational purposes.

The company's philanthropic goal is to encourage students to pursue careers in math, science and technology, thereby helping to develop a new generation of skilled technologists.

In 1999, Synopsys established the Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Outreach Foundation to promote interest in maths and science through project-based learning for teachers and students in grades K-12.

Since 1999, Synopsys has pledged over $4 million to promote science fair participation, develop advanced research classes and create science labs.

In three school years, programme participation in Santa Clara County has grown from 1200 to 26,000 students.
