Taiyo Yuden claims its Bluetooth module is the first full module in the world to earn certification for compliance with the requirements of Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 The company has certified two variations of its Class 2 module, one with a USB interface and one with a UART interface

Taiyo Yuden is currently working towards certification of its Class 1 (20dBm) module, which will bring the company even closer to its goal of becoming the world's supplier of the de facto standard of Bluetooth module.

Taiyo Yuden has geared up its manufacturing facilities to begin mass production of the certified module this June, and plans to produce one million Bluetooth modules per month by the end of 2001.

The new module, which enables wireless short-haul mobile communications in the 2.4GHz radio band, measures 32 x 16 x 2.4mm, includes maximum output to 4dBm and is designed for use in a variety of mobile applications, among them cellular phones and personal digital assistants.

Among its new and improved features is the ability to communicate seamlessly within a Bluetooth piconet, the wireless network of up to eight Bluetooth-enabled devices, and within a Bluetooth scatternet, which consists of multiple piconets.

Taiyo Yuden's certified module is built on the radio modem IC developed by Silicon Wave, a San Diego-based high-frequency semiconductor research and development company.

The single-chip radio modem uses silicon-on-insulator (SoI) BiCMOS process technology and direct conversion demodulation, resulting in high-isolation, low switching loss, use of fewer subcomponents, eg SAW or LC filters, and thus lower cost and smaller size.

The Bluetooth certification process is required for all products manufactured and sold with Bluetooth wireless communications technology.

It sets certain minimum standards of performance, interoperability and other features for all products bearing the applicable Bluetooth trademark.

Certification is a necessary precondition of the intellectual property license for Bluetooth technology.
