Taiyo Yuden is claiming a world's first with its surface-mountable Micro DC/DC convertor Under low power output conditions, the novel new Micro DC/DC convertor functions together with the portable or other handheld device's battery to provide a distributed power source that minimises power loss through supply voltage control of the unit's RF power amplifier circuit

The Micro DC/DC's exceptionally high power output per unit volume (20W/cm3) operates so efficiently (up to 85%) that the cellphone, PDA, DSC or other portable/hand held device actually conserves energy.

In the case of a cellular telephone this translates to an increase in talk time from 180 to as long as 250min: equating to a 39% improvement.

The chip accepts input voltages between 3.0 and 5.5V and provides an adjustable output from 0.8 to 3.0V DC at 350mA, with a typical output ripple of only 20mV peak-peak.

Production quantities of buck convertors are available now.

Engineering samples of four other device configurations - boost 1, boost 2, buck boost and inverting - are available now, and will be in full production in 2002.

The device's ultracompact package typically measures only 5.7 x 4.2 x 2.35mm.

Taiyo Yuden's advanced materials science and semiconductor mounting technology incorporate precise flip chip bonding with micron level control to achieve extremely small physical packaging, precise high-density component mounting and compatibility with standard tape-and-reel dispensers.

Taiyo Yuden's product roadmap for the micro DC/DC product calls for continued significant miniaturisation.

Next-generation Micro DC/DC convertors will offer up to a 500% increase in power-to-size ratio (100W/cm3) by the third quarter of 2002.

An intermediate stage, to be announced in April 2002, will double the power output by volume of today's component to 40W/cm3.
