Once hardware engineering is complete, the code base can then be moved to the prototype device.
This makes it possible for software and hardware development to go on concurrently.
The toolset supports intent, Java Technology Edition, a Sun Authorised Java compliant and branded engine that runs real world, rich multimedia Java content extraordinarily fast and in very small footprints.
"CodeWarrior is the most advanced toolset for wireless platform and content development", said Francis Charig, executive chairman at the Tao Group.
"With this announcement Metrowerks is enabling developers to target the intent platform and take advantage of its many benefits including best-in-class graphics and audio combined with a binary portable code base, multi-language, multi-operating system and multi processor support".
The intent Media Platform is included with the CodeWarrior tools.
Hosted on Microsoft Windows 98/NT/2000 platforms, the toolset supports C, C++, the Java language, and Tao Group's proprietary Virtual Processor (VP) assembly language.
"Our CodeWarrior tools for intent are an important addition to Metrowerks' family of platform development tools for wireless devices", said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks.
"It takes us one step further into fulfilling our vision of providing developers with tools to create the products that change the world".
Tao's intent provides a complete and portable framework that allows developers to easily create multimedia content, such as advanced video games, that run on connected digital appliances, even low-end client devices.
The intent suite is available as a binary portable content engine on operating systems such as Windows, Pocket PC, Microsoft Smartphone, Linux, embedded Linux, iTRON, Symbian OS, and VxWorks.
Tao's intent can also run in "native" mode, using the powerful intent real time kernel at the heart of the intent system, designed by Tao from its inception as a multimedia, deterministic operating system that is being incorporated into many devices, especially in Japan.
CodeWarrior Development Tools for intent Media Platform, Java Technology Edition, is available today for Intel processors.
A version for Hitachi's SH-Mobile processors will be available in May 2002.
The product can be purchased direct from Metrowerks at www.metrowerks.com at a price of US $4995 per license.
