OpenKode, an open standard defined by The Khronos Group, tackles fragmentation by bringing together existing industry-standard media APIs with a newly defined API to abstract operating system services; this creates improved source portability for media and graphics applications over a wide range of platforms, operating systems and devices.
Tao's intent GamePlayer further provides binary portability over a variety of platforms beyond handsets such as set-top boxes, automotive and PCs, and a provisioning mechanism to allow native content to be efficiently downloaded, installed and launched.
OpenKode is a royalty-free, cross-platform set of APIs that aims to make media capabilities consistently available across multiple devices, thereby increasing native source portability and reducing mobile platform fragmentation.

OpenKode 1.0 specifies the OpenGL ES 1.1 and OpenVG 1.0 Khronos media APIs for state-of-the-art acceleration for vector 2D and 3D graphics in addition to the new OpenKode Core API.
Tim Renouf, the OpenKode Specification Editor for Khronos and Systems Architect at Tao Group said, "Reducing fragmentation to enable lower cost creation and deployment of native content is the key to unlocking the revenue potential of the new generation of mobile devices".

OpenKode represents a significant advance for the handheld device industry as it combines the industry-leading Khronos media APIs into a reliable set of functionality that can provide increased performance on mobile devices, whilst reducing the fragmentation that has prevented software developers marketing their products to a wider audience.
Neil Trevett, Vice President of Embedded Content at Nvidia, Khronos President and Chairman of the OpenKode Working Group Chair said, "Tao has played a key role in enabling the OpenKode working group to produce an outstanding standard in just twelve months by bringing their unique experience in creating portable handheld applications to the Khronos specification process".
