TT Electronics has acquired Sensopad Technologies, and aims to exploit its innovative sensor technology in the automotive market.

TT Electronics has acquired Sensopad Technologies, and aims to exploit its innovative sensor technology in the automotive market Sensopad is based in Cambridge, England and was established as part of the Generics Group in 2001

The company was created to develop its patented, contactless position sensing and identification technology.

The Sensopad acquisition will enable TT Electronics to expand further its extensive range of sensor applications.

Sensopad has developed a range of inductive noncontact sensing technologies, primarily aimed at displacement measurement.

The greatest commercial potential is the "passive" position sensing.

This is where a small target or "puck" is embedded into an object so that its position and identity can be measured by a nearby printed circuit board.

This technology is suitable for applications in the wide variety of control systems where position measurement is required.

A major advantage of the technology is that it provides more scope for design engineers to avoid design constraints such as environmental seals or tight manufacturing tolerances and achieve the same functional results.

This technology has a wide range of applications for the automotive market including electronic throttle control (both pedal and body), braking, suspension, steering, transmission, exhaust gas recirculation and seat position sensors.

To support its technology, Sensopad has developed a computer-aided system for the design and simulation of the sensors, so that they can be virtually built and tested before any hardware is made.

Lead times can be substantially reduced, the only constraint being the mechanical design requirements of the various applications.

Neil Rodgers, Director of TT Electronics commented on the acquisition: "The technology developed by Sensopad will enhance TT Electronics' global sensor activities for the automotive market, providing the company with new and innovative technology for a huge range of sensor applications.

We are very enthusiastic about this acquisition as it will stimulate further growth in the sale of TT Electronics sensors".

Mark Howard, Chief Executive, Sensopad Technologies says: "Sensopad's technology is simple, effective and durable with huge potential for growth in the competitive environment of automotive sensor applications.

The global strength of TT Electronics will enable us to exploit fully this exciting technology, providing access to markets that were previously beyond our reach".
