Controller cuts modems down to size
Modem controller IC integrates a microcontroller, datapump, memory and system side device in a single die.
A tiny new modem controller IC can be used to create complete modem implementation in a smaller space than some single-chip solutions with a highly competitive BoM cost The Conexant CX93021 from TDC measures just 5 x 5mm, yet integrates a microcontroller, datapump, memory and system side device in a single die

TDC offers a compatible Conexant SmartDAA line side device making a neat two-chip solution, as well as third optional speakerphone IC for applications requiring voice functionality.
According to TDC, the new chipset is ideal for retail modems, video phones, lifts, game consoles and Internet appliances, offering a highly cost effective and compact embedded modem implementation.
The new device is based on the Conexant CSM92 modem controller architecture, Conexant's latest range of worldwide operational modem device sets for embedded applications.
They take advantage of Conexant's fourth generation SmartDAA technology.
Modulations up to V.92, from V.34 and V.32bis and below, respectively, are included.
The CSM92-SP supports V.44 in addition to other variants supporting V.42bis/MNP 5 data compression for greater data throughput, and V.42 LAPM/MNP2-4 error correction protocol for increased data integrity and reliability.
Intended for serial applications that require optional full duplex speakerphone this modem is available as a tiny 36-pin QFN package that is both Pb-free and RoHS compliant.
For flexibility the modem will accept a 28.224 or 27.000MHz crystal or clock input.
For voice applications, the CX93021 has a serial interface and codec interface for connection to the optional CX20452 codec for speakerphone applications.
The device features 63 embedded and upgradeable country profiles.
