Lead-free process is available for use
Texcel Technology has begun manufacturing RoHS-compliant (lead-free) products for its customers.
It has also linked its own demand forecasting, quality and production engineering processes with those of Start-Spellman.
As well as providing access to advanced surface-mount production capability, Texcel has enabled the HV manufacturer to focus all its attention on product design, encapsulation, system assembly and test.
"This is really about supply chain management", says Peter Shawyer, MD of Texcel.
"We are given visibility of our customer's customer, and we share who our key suppliers are.
By working together we can ensure that the end-user gets a better product, and better service".
The agreement covers surface mount, and conventional PCBs used in HV power systems, utilising devices ranging from QFPs up to HV diodes.
"Our customers expect 24 hour a day reliability for 25 years, so we need a supplier we can trust", comments Keith Allum, Materials Manager at Start-Spellman.
"As well as on-time deliveries at the right price, Texcel has proven its willingness to transfer knowledge at multiple levels, and thereby help us improve our products".
The agreement is the result of an extensive review of 25 potential suppliers and represents a significant extension of previous work successfully undertaken by Texcel over a number of years.
A key aspect of the long-term agreement is regular meetings between Texcel engineers and Start-Spellman technical and production teams, to proactively identify future improvements and address long-term issues such as obsolescence.
Although becoming common in high volume markets, this type of agreement is believed to be unusual for small volume, wide range product lines such as these.
