Accessories boost scope performance

Tektronix has released two new oscilloscope probes and accessories for the acquisition and analysis of high-speed signals in computer, communications and advanced electronics applications.

Tektronix has released two new oscilloscope probes and accessories for the acquisition and analysis of high-speed signals in computer, communications and advanced electronics applications Today's design engineers face a host of unique signal integrity challenges including a critical need for an active probe with bandwidth performance beyond 4GHz that must be addressed during the development of advanced digital technologies

As the first oscilloscope probe to implement IBM's silicon germanium (SiGe) technology, the P7260, the world's fastest active probe, allows engineers to make high-speed measurements quickly and efficiently, providing a greater level of insight into signal behaviour with maximum signal fidelity.

The TCA-1MEG high-impedance buffer amplifier system enables engineers to extend the capabilities of Tektronix' high-performance oscilloscopes using the TekConnect accessory interface by providing access to a variety of probes.

"With the introduction of these probes and accessories, combined with our high-performance oscilloscopes, including the world's-fastest, the TDS6604 digital storage oscilloscope (DSO), Tektronix demonstrates its leadership and commitment to providing unrivaled signal fidelity in measurement systems", said Colin Shepard, Vice President, Oscilloscope Products, Tektronix: "Since signal analysis is only as good as the quality of the acquired signal, Tektronix delivers products with the best fidelity available so our customers can tackle today's signal integrity issues with confidence in their measurement system".

Delivering the world's fastest oscilloscope performance at the probe tip With SiGe technology, the P7260 is the world's fastest active probe with 6GHz bandwidth and better than 75ps risetime capability.

It features a toggle/switch that offers customers the choice of using the probe with a dynamic range of 6V peak-to-peak with 25x attenuation or at 1.5V peak-to-peak with 5x attenuation with increased sensitivity.

An input capacitance of less than 0.5pF, the lowest input capacitance specification in the world for this type of probe, ensures minimum loading of the signal for the most accurate acquisition system available.

The PPM100 probe positioner provides customers with a general-purpose hands-free benchtop probing aid at an affordable price.

Employing three-axis control that holds a probe in a desired position, the tool is available with either a high-mass base or a clamp.

The new TCA-1MEG high-impedance buffer amplifier system delivers versatility to Tektronix' high-performance oscilloscopes through the addition of selectable input coupling, selectable bandwidth limit, and a 1Mohm input.

These additions provide access to an array of probes with bandwidth up to 500MHz, including general-purpose passive probes, high-voltage probes (passive single-ended and active differential), microvolt differential probes, and current probes.

For today's high-speed measurement systems, having switchable 50ohm and 1Mohm terminations on the same input path compromises signal fidelity.

By providing the one-megohm path as an external accessory, the TCA-1MEG system eliminates a permanent degradation of the 50ohm signal path.

It also allows users to easily and quickly configure each channel for the input characteristics required for the desired measurement.

Maximum signal fidelity for signals greater than 500MHz is maintained at the input by swapping the TCA-1MEG for a high-performance 50ohm adapter or other probing solution.

The TekConnect interface ensures superior signal fidelity with useful bandpass up to 18GHz at the oscilloscope input, while offering unparalleled versatility through signal acquisition accessories for high-performance oscilloscopes.

This robust interface enables next-generation Tektronix oscilloscopes with multi-gigahertz analogue bandwidths, overcoming many of the inherent bandwidth limitations of BNC-based interfaces.

The TekConnect interface preserves a low voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) 50ohm environment, as well as a reliable electrical connection.

A convenient one-button release and locking mechanism provides quick, easy installation and removal of probes, amplifiers and adapters.
