Analysers gain HSDPA test capability

Tektronix has added high-speed downlink packet access test capability to its wireless communications analysers for the development of next-generation mobile user and network equipment.

Tektronix has added high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) test capability to its WCA series of wireless communications analysers for the development of next-generation mobile user and network equipment The addition will enable designers and manufacturers to test their latest wireless device designs that incorporate HSDPA technology

Companies throughout the mobile industry are reporting increases in infrastructure spending.

As a result, mobile equipment manufacturers are working on designs that will enable the acceleration of next-generation devices and networks.

HSDPA, one of the latest next-generation technologies, has the potential to extend third-generation (3G) capabilities to enable an all IP network that merges wireless and wireline infrastructure by significantly enhancing peak data rates, quality of service and spectrum efficiency.

To meet designers' requirements to test HSDPA designs today, Tektronix added an HSDPA test suite to its WCA200A Series of wireless communications analysers.

"Time to market is key for companies developing new wireless technologies like HSDPA", said Rick King, Vice President, Spectrum Analyser Product Line, Tektronix.

"The unique trigger, capture, and analyse capabilities of Tektronix' wireless communications analysers form a powerful troubleshooting tool that enables designers to solve tough RF system integration problems that typically delay new product introductions".

HSDPA uses adaptive modulation and coding to increase user data rates in the downlink direction (transmission from the radio access network to the mobile terminal).

Adaptive modulation allows the network operator to change modulation formats, in real-time, providing faster data rates and improved spectrum efficiency.

Because Tektronix' wireless communication analysers incorporate real-time spectrum analysis, they provide the best toolset to address adaptive modulation.

Real-time spectrum analysis allows the user to trigger, capture and analyse transient anomalies that can occur during the dynamic changes in modulation.

Seamless capture of the RF signal enables the designer to analyse the signal before, after and during the transient event.

Thanks to its versatile features, high accuracy and measurement speed, the WCA200A Series is equipped to perform both complex RF and modulation analysis and fast and accurate design verification.

Its multidomain capabilities provide powerful insight into complex, time varying signals, enabling engineers to view the ACK/NACK (acknowledgement/negative acknowledgement) function and CQI data (channel quality indicator) during an HSDPA call.

The WCA200A Series includes the WCA230A (3GHz) and the WCA280A (8GHz).

The analysers provide a unique combination of flexibility, speed and accuracy for developers of wireless components, systems and networks.

In the past, design engineers have been required to choose either a standards-oriented vector signal analyser with limited spectrum analysis capability or a spectrum analyser with limited demodulation capabilities requiring a great deal of set up time and operator knowledge.

The WCA200A Series offers superior versatility, providing spectrum analysis, flexible demodulation and in-depth troubleshooting at a midrange price. Request a free brochure from Tektronix ...
