RF module offers quick route to ZigBee
A new meshing RF module aims to allow companies to tap into the lucrative ZigBee market for wireless control and monitoring products with no in-house RF engineering experience.
The buzz about ZigBee Pro
Ollie Smith, Business Development Director of Telegesis, thinks ZigBee mesh networking radio has finally come of age.
Incorporating the new single chip EM250 ZigBee system from Ember, the devices offer developers a simple means for bringing advanced wireless-enabled products to market quickly without the need for RF experience and expertise.
Telegesis provides an AT-style command line interface for the modules, which is similar in style to that used to control dial-up modems.
Based on the recently developed EmberZNet2.2 mesh stack, this powerful interface makes it easy for those not expert in ZigBee wireless network technology to develop applications without the use of complex software engineering.
Also available are ETRX2 development kits, which enable rapid demonstration and in-depth assessment of a working ZigBee mesh.
"As developers become comfortable with the technology, they can add more modules to widen the mesh and experiment with the full capability of the modules", said Telegesis' Managing Director, Nicholas Gomersall.
The new modules are suitable for a wide range of innovative monitoring and control applications, including automatic meter reading, wireless alarms and security, home and building automation, industrial controls, item tracking and control of PC peripherals.
With their small form factor, measuring 37.75 x 20mm, the modules are compatible with the previous Telegesis ETRX1 devices.
Each module contains a 16bit microcontroller with 128Kbyte of embedded Flash memory and 5Kbyte of integrated SRAM for data and program storage.
Available with a choice of three antenna options, they operate in the 2.4GHz ISM radio band.
Four different power modes are supported to provide extended battery life.
Operating temperate range is from -40 to +85C.
