Reference design for wireless optical comms
A new technology from Texas Instruments dramatically cuts the cost and complexity of bringing the high-speed datarates of optical networking to end users.
The device provides system protection and design flexibility for applications based on high-performance backplanes in optical networking, data storage, telecommunications, industrial control and other areas.
Many high-availability systems need to support hot-swapped card exchanges and power event management during operation.
These exchanges and events introduce instantaneous changes in current that can damage system components.

TI's TPS2306 power manager protects against inrush current from hot swapping and offers design flexibility through programmable sequencing and other power management features.
"Hot swapping of add-in cards is taking place in a wider variety of high availability systems, and designers need flexible exchange and event power management", said Steven Hemmah, Hot Swap Products manager, TI.
"TI's new TPS2306 dual-sequencing power manager provides an easy-to-use solution that enables designers to program sequencing, ramp current and provide event protection features to meet today's system requirements".
Developers can control inrush current directly with the TPS2306 by programming the on-chip linear current amplifiers with three simple external components.
In addition, the device is easily programmed with simple resistor dividers for unlimited sequencing combinations during power-up and power-down.
The TPS2306 has the lowest insertion loss of any hot swap product currently on the market.
Internally trimmed circuits reduce the circuit break trip voltage and allow the use of very low-value resistors or PC board copper traces for sensing.
The internal charge pump ensures maximum gate overdrive to reduce the on-state drain-source resistance of the external N-channel mosfet, further lowering the insertion loss.
The TPS2306 is the only comparable device that can be programmed to sequence the power-up or down of two voltage rails in any order.
Two or more controllers can be cascaded to provide multiple outputs for systems with more complex power-up requirements.
The TPS2306 dual-sequencing hot swap power controller is available now in a 16-pin small-outline integrated circuit (SOIC) package.
Suggested resale pricing is $3.50 per unit in quantities of 1000.
