Reference design for wireless optical comms
A new technology from Texas Instruments dramatically cuts the cost and complexity of bringing the high-speed datarates of optical networking to end users.
Thanks to its high integration and minimal external component requirements, the chipset is ideal for use in notebook computers, handheld terminals, medical and test equipment, and other portable equipment powered by three or four series Li-ion or Li-polymer battery packs.
The battery management chipset consists of the bq2081 Smart Battery System (SBS version 1.1) gas gauge IC and the bq29311 Li-ion protector IC.
As a chipset, the bq2081/bq29311 solution simplifies the design and reduces the number of components required for a Li-ion SBS-compatible battery fuel gauge and protection circuit by as much as 40% compared with previous generations or competitive solutions.

As a result, the bq2081/bq29311 circuit can fit in less than one square inch of PCB space.
The bq2081 is the first in a series of battery capacity monitoring ICs based on TI's new Cool-GG low-power platform.
Optimised for battery management, the platform integrates an 8bit RISC CPU core, Flash EPROM configuration memory, two communication ports, safety control outputs and two high-performance ADCs.
The devices offer a new level of performance that further improves the accuracy and resolution of battery parameter measurements versus those incorporated on other platforms.
For battery capacity measurements, the bq2081 employs a continuous self-calibrating integrated ADC.
The convertor has a resolution better than 3nVh with a calibrated measurement offset error of 1uV (typical).
The high resolution and low offset error allow the use of a low value sense resistor (10mohm) for accurate charge and discharge integration of the wide range of currents found in today's portable applications.
For temperature, instantaneous current, and battery voltage, the bq2081 uses a second 15bit delta-sigma convertor.
The new analogue peripherals, together with TI's proprietary cell modelling algorithms and the RISC processor core, allow the bq2081 to achieve greater than 1% accuracy in its capacity and run-time calculations.
In addition, the bq29311 serves as the Li-ion cell protector and analogue front end to the bq2081.
Accepting an input voltage of up to 25V, the bq29311 runs directly off the battery stack voltage and provides a regulated 3.3V to the bq2081, sources LED current for capacity indication and provides bias current for the temperature sense network.
Furthermore, the bq2081 communicates to the bq29311 over a two-wire serial bus.
The bq29311 provides requested voltage signals to the bq2081 that the bq2081 then uses for voltage calculations, safety determinations and cell balancing requirements.
The bq29311 also controls the charge and discharge FETs and can change the state of the FETs for safety protection autonomously or under bq2081 control.
Additional features include a SBS version 1.1 compatible dataset and communication protocol with packet error checking, as well as complete Li-ion protection, including programmable thresholds for overvoltage/undervoltage, overcurrent (charge and discharge), short circuit, overtemperature and cell balancing.
Samples of the bq2081 and bq29311 will be available in November with volume production planned for December 2001.
The bq2081 is packaged in a 38-pin TSSOP (DBT) while the bq29311 is supplied in a 24-pin TSSOP (PW).
Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1000 is $4.05 for the bq2081 and $1.20 for the bq29311.
