Reference design for wireless optical comms
A new technology from Texas Instruments dramatically cuts the cost and complexity of bringing the high-speed datarates of optical networking to end users.
The Widcomm/TI dongle allows wireless connectivity between a PC and peripherals, printers, or mobile phones and provides Bluetooth functionality without the need for software installation and configuration.
The reference design is based on TI's BSN6050, a highly integrated point-to-multipoint Bluetooth solution.
Embedding the Bluetooth protocol stack into the dongle reduces cost by eliminating the need for a processor host and improves the user experience by eliminating the need for any software installation.

Triple-output power modules shrink ADSL designs
Texas Instruments has unveiled two new triple-output plug-in power solutions for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) applications.
Users can use the dongle directly "out of the box" on any USB-compatible device for a true "plug and play" experience.
Dongles using the Widcomm/TI design will be available from a number of manufacturers, with the first being GVC.
"TI's BSN6050 platform is an ideal fit for an embedded dongle reference design because it is extremely flexible and versatile", said Andreas Malzach, Vice President of Marketing at WIDCOMM.
"Collaborating with TI enables us to draw on the strengths of both companies.
We have created an industry-leading reference design, combining USB and Bluetooth technology and ready to use wireless connectivity available to everyone".
"Leveraging TI's and Widcomm's wireless and Bluetooth expertise, this reference design creates a host of opportunities for expanding the Bluetooth market", said Ari Rauch, General Manager of TI Short Distance Wireless.
"The new USB dongle makes Bluetooth functionality easily accessible at a very competitive cost".
The ROM-based BSN6050 is a high performance solution supporting 723Kbit/s (DH5 packets) of data, which is the full Bluetooth datarate.
Features include support for up to seven piconet links and up to three simultaneous SCO (synchronous connection oriented) voice channels.
The device also supports master-slave switching and park, sniff and hold modes for power reduction applications.
The BSN6050 uses advanced 0.15-micron technology to ensure extremely low power consumption for users.
Prototypes with human interface devices (HID) support are now available for Bluetooth-enabled peripheral devices (keyboard and mouse).
Later releases will include dial-up support to be used in combination with mobile phones (DUN-profile) and printing support (HCRP, BPP, BIP profiles).
A GVC dongle based on the Widcomm/TI USB dongle reference design will be available as an OEM product in Q3 2002 and will cost less than $20 in volume quantities.
Dongles from other manufacturers will be available subsequently.
