A novel high-side DMOS PWM driver is optimised for controlling electromechanical and thermal devices such as valves, solenoids, relays, actuators, heaters, coolers and lamps.

PWM operation also allows precise control of the power delivered at designated levels and intervals to the system.

The DRV104 operates over a single +8 to +32V supply range.

"The rugged DRV104 offers customers a complete, fully tested solution for high-side switching with the benefit of power conservation and increased reliability all for less than it would cost a designer to build their own solution with an oscillator, PWM, control, drive, power switch, thermal/current protection and diagnostic flag", said John Brown, Strategic Marketing Engineer of TI's high-performance linear products.

The DRV104 can be set to provide a strong initial solenoid closure, automatically switching to a soft hold mode for power savings.

The duty cycle can be controlled by a resistor, an analogue voltage, or a digital/analogue convertor for versatility.

A status flag pin indicates thermal shutdown or overcurrent conditions.

Timing and internal oscillator frequency are externally adjustable.

Separate supply pins for the control circuitry and driver transistor allow this device to operate on separate supplies, such as +5 to +24V.

The DRV104 is available in a 14-lead HSOP PowerPAD package, and is available now from TI and its authorised distributors.

The device is priced from $1.51 in 1000-piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).
