Texas Instruments has unveiled the latest pair of programmable DSPs in its ultra-power-efficient TMS320C55x family of digital signal processors.
Triple-output power modules shrink ADSL designs
Texas Instruments has unveiled two new triple-output plug-in power solutions for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) applications.
The C6410, priced at $17.95, offers a substantial price/performance ratio of 89 MMACs (million multiply-accumulates) per dollar, and the C6413, priced at $28.95, offers 69 MMACS per dollar at a clock rate of 500MHz.
"Embedded applications require the right balance of performance, peripherals, price and on-chip memory", says Will Strauss, President, Forward Concepts.
"These new devices make the high-performance capabilities of the C64x architecture accessible and affordable to a new spectrum of applications driven by connectivity for a variety of digital media".
Integrated on-chip are two standard McBSPs for multichannel clocked serial communication, two audio serial ports compatible with IIS and common stereo codecs, a 16/32bit microprocessor host port interface, and two IIC control serial ports.
Also included is an on-chip oscillator that lowers overall system cost by enabling developers to use a lower-cost crystal in place of an external oscillator.
The two new devices, the C6410 and C6413, have been added to the roadmap on a new vector called the "performance value" vector.
This extension to the roadmap refers to new lower price devices in the high-performance C64x generation, and C64x devices that lower system cost through extensive peripheral integration.
With this vector, TI is lowering the entry price point so that customers can get the needed performance to create new and innovative applications that will shape the industry in the coming years.

Now we are excited to bring even lower entry pricing to the high performance class of C64x DSP applications", says Thomas Brooks, TMS320C6000 Marketing Manager, TI.
"Devices like the C6410 and C6413 DSPs provide higher performance at a lower cost and will enable developers to lower the cost of telecomms, medical, industrial, office and photo lab equipment, making them more competitive in the market".
Two development boards are available today to allow developers to get an early start on their C64x DSP designs, the new C6413 evaluation module (EVM) and the TMS320C6416 DSP starter kit (DSK), codeveloped with Spectrum Digital.
The DSK contains a C6416-based development board, easy to use examples, tutorials, TI's DSP/BIOS operating system, and off-the-shelf algorithms ready to run from the TI DSP Third Party Network.
The C6413 EVM board contains the 500MHz TMS320C6413, ample onboard memory and interfaces through a standard JTAG interface to the development system.
The C6416, C6413 and C6410 DSPs are 100% software code compatible along with the rest of the entire C6000 platform, which enables developers to achieve faster time to market for new designs.
With these two development platforms, designers have two excellent ways to begin development of key pieces of the system, specifically algorithms, control code and initial software system integration.
The TMS320C6410 running at 400MHz with 160Kbyte total memory is $17.95 (10,000 units), and the 500MHz TMS320C6413 has 288Kbyte total memory and costs $28.95 (10,000 units).
Both are packaged in 23 x 23mm flip-chip BGA packages (288 pins, 4 rows, 1.0mm BGA pitch), which maximises channel density and allows four layer board routing.
Samples are available now with full production slated for September 2004.
