Media processors take on video applications
Two new digital media processors are tailored for the video and imaging market, including video over IP, multichannel digital video recording and high-quality video encoding and decoding.
The two reference designs from Federal Technologies (Fedtec) and Ingenient Technologies are hard disk drive-based (HDD) designs, which provide the hardware and software foundation developers need to bring fully functional portable media players and recorders to market quickly.
TI's OEMs can easily choose from the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of off-the-shelf video, audio, imaging and networking codecs, protocols and enhancement algorithms, including MPEG-4 SP, ASP, H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-1, DivXT, WMV9 and MJPEG.
Developers also can take advantage of the power efficiency and performance headroom of TI's digital media processor by differentiating their products with their own software for advanced functionality.

Media processors power up latest IP set top boxes
Kreatel has chosen the TMS320DM64x generation of digital media processors based on TI's C64xT DSP core for its upcoming IP set top box products.
"As the leaders in this market, we continue to produce technologies that drive the future of portable media jukeboxes, enabling new features to be added while making the products easier to use", says Chris Schairbaum, Worldwide Business Manager of TI's Portable Audio and Infotainment business unit.
"Working with Fedtec and Ingenient, we are able to help OEMs begin development within days of deciding to launch a portable media player".
The MP4900-BRD-DM320-20 hardware reference design from Ingenient runs Embedded Linux or Ingenient's own optimised Microkernel with Ingenient's Multimedia Framework software, including application software and customisable graphical user interface (GUI).
The reference design can decode either half-D1 resolution Windows Media Video 9 (WMV) or CIF resolution H.264 at 30 frames per second, and can encode high quality full D1 resolution MPEG-4 at 30 frames per second.
The FPMC320 ready-to-manufacture Portable Multimedia Centre reference design from Fedtec runs the FedLinux operating system, with drivers, system and application software and a customisable GUI.
It can encode and decode full D1 resolution MPEG-4 at 30 frames per second apart from all popular audio, video, image and speech codecs.
Fedtec, in collaboration with its third-party manufacturers, also would sell customised portable media players/recorders to OEMs, per their specifications as an original design manufacturer.
Both reference designs are available now and offer the complete hardware and software needed to create high-quality consumer portable multimedia players, including the operating system, all popular multimedia algorithms, system code and documentation.
