VCA boasts exceptional gain adjust range
The VCA810 provides a differential input to single ended output amplifier primarily used for analogue signal processing in pulse or time domain systems.
A new wideband, voltage-controlled amplifier features a continuously variable 80dB gain adjust range, +/-0.5dB gain accuracy and a constant 35MHz signal bandwidth The VCA810 provides a differential input to single ended output amplifier primarily used for analogue signal processing in pulse or time domain systems

Reference design for wireless optical comms
A new technology from Texas Instruments dramatically cuts the cost and complexity of bringing the high-speed datarates of optical networking to end users.
Typical applications for the VCA810 include optical receiver time gain control and distance measurement, sonar systems, voltage-tuneable active filters, log amp functions and differential receivers.
"The VCA810 combines high-gain adjust range, low noise, high bandwidth and unmatched gain accuracy, making it ideal for pulse-oriented signal paths requiring a gain normalisation prior to further processing", said Michael Steffes, Strategic Marketing Manager of TI's High-Speed Signal Processing Group.
The amplifier operates from +/-5V supplies with low input voltage noise (2.4nV/(rt)Hz), low supply current (24.8mA) and high output current (+/-60mA).
As the VCA810 offers a precisely trimmed dB/V gain adjust characteristic, AGC loops can use the gain control voltage as a received signal strength indicator with excellent accuracy.
When the VCA810 is used to equalise varying channel loss, minimal change in group delay over gain setting will retain critical pulse edge information.
An improved output stage provides adequate output current to drive the most demanding loads.
The VCA810 is packaged in an SO-8 and is available now from TI and its authorised distributors.
The device is priced at $5.75 in 1000-piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).
A companion product, the VCA811, offers a wider 80MHz signal bandwidth and will be available in Q1 2005.
