A new wireless platform combines applications and modem functionalities and allows handset manufacturers to easily scale across multiple market segments for GSM/GPRS/Edge and UMTS standards.

Texas Instruments has developed a new wireless platform that combines applications and modem functionalities and allows handset manufacturers to easily scale across multiple market segments for GSM/GPRS/Edge and UMTS standards Built on TI's successful OMAP processor technology, and more than 10 years serving the high-volume handset modem marketplace, the new OMAP-Vox family of solutions merges both modem and applications functionality onto the existing OMAP architecture

OMAP-Vox solutions share a common software platform that can be re-used for a variety of growing market requirements and bring overall development costs down.

"Six of the top seven 3G handset manufacturers use TI 3G technology in over 45 models shipping today".

"With more than 50% of the UMTS semiconductor marketplace, TI has won the first wave of 3G designs", said Gilles Delfassy, Senior Vice President, Wireless Terminals Business Unit.

"By continuing to work closely with our customers and mobile operators, and with this new technology for 3G products, TI is also positioned to win the next wave of 3G designs by bringing 3G handsets to the masses at an attractive price point".

"TI's technology will fuel this growth and provide choice in the marketplace".

By enabling extensive modem and applications software re-use from 2.5G to 3G and across market segments, the OMAP-Vox platform saves manufacturers years of software design effort.

This allows manufacturers to quickly bring a variety of handsets to market to meet the high-volume needs of the 2.5G marketplace today with a quick migration to 3G.

For mobile phone operators, this results in a wide variety of available handsets that support common services and software, from cost-effective phones to high-end mobile entertainment phones enabled by TI's OMAP 2 architecture.

Like all of TI's OMAP processors, this new technology platform provides access to the OMAP Platform Ecosystem, a worldwide network of application software developers, system integrators and development tool providers.

TI's OMAP-Vox modem technology is optimised to efficiently run a dynamic mixture of applications and baseband communications on the same hardware.

The OMAP-Vox scalable hardware architecture has enough performance to run modem and applications on the same processing core sharing hardware resources and is designed to easily extend from 2.5G to 3G and beyond.

Manufacturers can then cost-effectively deliver 3G handsets to the mass market.

The OMAP-Vox platform provides flexible, open interfaces for all modem and applications components and can therefore be upgraded to support additional features, allowing for more handset innovation.

To meet the stringent security requirements set by mobile operators, manufacturers, content providers and financial services, TI's OMAP-Vox solutions include embedded security technology, a set of hardware accelerators supporting terminal security, transactions security and content security, without the latencies and risks associated with software-only solutions.

From antenna to applications, the OMAP-Vox platform offers complete system solutions encompassing integrated modem and applications processor, RF, analogue and power management functions, complete field tested protocol stack software, applications software suites, a precertified form-factor handset reference design, and a complete development toolkit.

The first product in this new family is the OMAPV1030 GSM/GPRS/Edge chipset, one of the industry's most integrated and optimised solutions to enable mid-range multimedia devices.

The OMAPV1030 baseband processor design is built on TI's leading modem and OMAP technology and leverages TI's advanced high-volume 90nm digital process technology.

The OMAPV1030 enables applications such as QCIF 30 frame/s video capture, playback and streaming; megapixel digital still camera; colour LCD; and interactive 2D/3D gaming.

The OMAPV1030 solution is sampling now with volume production expected in 3Q05.

To provide OMAPV1030 customers with a logical modem roadmap from GSM/GPRS/Edge to UMTS and HSDPA, TI is developing additional OMAP-Vox solutions designed specifically to address the cost-optimised, feature phone and smartphone UMTS market segments.

OMAP-Vox solutions for UMTS are expected to sample in 2005.

Additionally, customers using TI's OMAP 2 applications processors will be able to migrate their applications software to future smartphone OMAP-Vox solutions.

The scalability and software re-use provided by the OMAP-Vox architecture, along with TI's digital RF processor (DRP) technology and process technology leadership, enable TI to drive the OMAP-Vox family into wireless standards beyond 3G.
