Digital signal controllers enter volume production
The TMS320F2801, TMS320F2806 and TMS320F2808 digital signal controllers are now in volume production.
An ideal mix of peripherals, including a patent pending pulsewidth modulator (PWM) with 64 times higher resolution than the nearest competitor, reduces external component count to provide a complete embedded control system with 100MIPS of 32bit DSP performance for less than $5 in volume.
The TMS320F2801, F2806 and F2808 controllers offer unprecedented PWM technology providing 16bit accuracy in a 100kHz control loop and 12bit at 1MHz.
Competing processors limit accuracy to less than 10bit at 100kHz.

Texas Instruments has unveiled the latest pair of programmable DSPs in its ultra-power-efficient TMS320C55x family of digital signal processors.
In digital power applications, higher resolution PWM results in a faster transient response with a smaller ripple amplitude.
F28x controllers' unique accuracy eliminates "limit cycle" issues, enabling power supply designers to employ digital control in high switching frequency supplies like those found in wireless basestations, network servers and even digital televisions, resulting in cleaner power output, higher power density, smaller magnetics and more compact, cooler supplies than are possible using analogue technology.
The F2808 controller also provides a highly accurate, 16-channel, 12bit analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC) with the conversion speed (up to 6.25Msample/s) needed for even the highest performance embedded control applications, providing a cost-effective single-chip blend of 32bit DSP and high-performance analogue peripherals.
The F28x DSP core architecture features a 32bit wide datapath for superior performance and mixed 16/32bit instruction set for improved code density.
The F28x offers unmatched system integration for a controller of its class, providing complete control system capabilities from signal input through the on-chip ADC, quadrature encoder pulse (QEP), and timer captures and compares through signal output with up to 16 independent PWM channels, enabling a single F2808 to control up to five independent three-phase motors.
Comparatively, competitors' DSP-based devices only provide up to 60MIPS of 16bit DSP performance.
Customer requests for system flexibility and development ease were a priority in designing the new F28x controllers.
Developers can operate each of the PWM channels, timers, QEPs, and captures either independently or synchronised together.
Modular design of F28x peripherals reduces overall system cost through enhanced scalability and reuse, increases ease of development, and accelerates time to market by allowing developers to, for example, leverage a single software driver across an entire peripheral set.
In addition, scalable peripheral integration and memory in footprint compatible packages allow OEMs to easily reuse their hardware and software designs across their product portfolio.
Sampling now, the TMS320F2801 controller is $4.95, the TMS320F2806 is $7.45, and the TMS320F2808 is $9.95, all in production quantities.
Each device will be qualified to the Q100 automotive standard and available in both a 100-pin LQFP and 100-ball BGA package, with volume production for all three devices scheduled for the third quarter of 2005.
The F2808 eZdsp Starter Kit (TMDXEZS2808), available now for $495 through TI 's authorised distributors and on the web, includes hardware tools, TI's comprehensive Code Composer Studio integrated development environment (IDE), and application software backed by expert training and extensive online support materials to get designers started developing embedded control applications immediately.
