Several OEMs using TI technology have added video capabilities to digital subscriber line based residential gateways.

Continuing to drive "triple play" capabilities into the residential gateway (RG) and across the broadband market, Texas Instruments has revealed that several OEMs using TI technology have added video capabilities to digital subscriber line (DSL)-based RGs Complete Media Systems (CMS) and Video Networks (VN) have created DSL-based Internet protocol (IP) set-top box (STB) solutions to deliver enhanced communications and entertainment capabilities including high performance, unicast video on demand (VoD), and multicast broadcast video, along with data services through a DSL connection

The DSL STB offering supports multiple interfaces and can be configured to operate in IP over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) or gigabit Ethernet environments, in addition to DSL.

The offering includes programmable codecs supporting the most popular video and audio standards from a number of third parties that are part of TI's global network.

This includes fully qualified software support for H.264 and MPEG2, MPEG4, Microsoft's WMV9 formats, AC-3 and AAC and others.

"Tightly integrating digital video and high-speed Internet capabilities give consumers access to a new range of affordable entertainment and communications options, furthering growth of the exploding digital video market", said Philip Smith, Chief Marketing Officer of Complete Media Systems (CMS).

"TI technology offers the performance and flexibility that we require to customise, manage and upgrade services according to demand, including development and high-volume deployment of triple play service with high definition Internet TV".

Based on TI's industry-leading AR7 DSL router and TMS320DM642 media processor, the AR7STB solution features both a complete DSL modem and video encoding/decoding in a single-board design.

The highly integrated AR7 router provides customers with the flexibility to add wireless LAN (WLAN) and voice capabilities to further differentiate their products.

The DM642 digital media processor built around TI's high-performance TMS320C64x DSP core is a fully programmable, flexible solution for video encoding and decoding which gives customers the ability to upgrade as standards evolve.

"Due to increased interest in "triple play", voice, data and video services, among consumers, IP STB growth is on the rise and is expected to reach over ten million units and generate over $1.5 billion in revenue by 2008", said Michelle Abraham, an analyst with In-Stat.

"Combining TI's popular AR7 DSL platform and its digital streaming media capabilities into a single platform will result in innovative, cost-effective and easy-to-implement designs".

"These capabilities will ultimately fuel increased demand for digital video applications such as IPTV and expand revenue opportunities for telco service providers".

TI has a breadth of products available today to help customers address digital video applications.

The AR7STB is the first of TI's DSL solutions to bring video to the RG market.

TI is actively developing next generation RG designs to further video deployment, including solutions to support VDSL2.

Future set-top box designs will be based on TI's recently introduced DaVinci technology, the industry's first completely integrated offering of processors, software and tools for digital video applications.

TI and third parties offer development boards for OEMs developing DSL-based IPSTB designs.
