Triple-output power modules shrink ADSL designs
Texas Instruments has unveiled two new triple-output plug-in power solutions for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) applications.
By using the industry's highest-performance DSP, TI's 1GHz TMS320TCI6482, and optimised W-CDMA software libraries, infrastructure OEMs can design a compact baseband solution, thereby dramatically reducing the overall cost of a pico basestation solution.
For example, a pico basestation supporting 32 simultaneous users can be implemented with just two TCI6482 DSPs, compared with previous solutions that were more complex.
These small basestations can be deployed in environments such as college campuses, subways, airports and office buildings.
OEMs can realise a high channel density solution with TI's 1GHz DSP because it can efficiently support the complex needs of W-CDMA baseband processing including symbol rate, chip rate and parts of the medium access control (MAC) layer functionality.
The TCI6482 DSP also supports the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) channels that are defined as part of Release 6 of the 3GPP W-CDMA standard.
Additionally, smaller femto basestation solutions used in personal area networks can be supported on a single DSP to boost 3G network access for individuals and small teams.
TI's TCI6482 DSP supports high performance baseband solutions at a relatively low power of just three watts.
Low power is a key metric for this application because small form factor basestations typically do not have fan cooling capabilities found in full size or macro basestations.
Using a software programmable approach enables OEMs to develop the most flexible baseband solution.
TI's software offering includes highly optimised software libraries that form the building blocks of a W-CDMA baseband solution.
"One of the key benefits of TI's solution is that customers can develop a highly differentiated and efficient product offering by combining their proprietary algorithms along with TI's optimised software", said Ramesh Kumar, TI's Wireless Infrastructure Marketing Manager.
"OEMs can take advantage of a software programmable approach to support a varied set of features to meet each operator's unique requirements".
Software upgrades in the field to support new features protect operator's investments, thereby reducing their exposure to the risks involved in emerging applications.
By using TI's software to develop their baseband solution, OEMs can lower development time and cost, reducing time to market.
"With the TCI6482 DSP, TI continues to push the boundaries on high performance, low-power and flexible silicon platforms for wireless infrastructure baseband processing", said Mark Skalabrin, Vice President and General Manager of Mercury Computer Systems Advanced Solutions Group.
"Mercury's MTI series of RapidIO enabled advanced mezzanine cards (AMC) coupled with TI's baseband technology and suite of software development tools will enable infrastructure OEMs to quickly develop pico basestation solutions".
TI offers the industry's broadest wireless infrastructure product portfolio.
The GC5016 digital up-convertor and down-convertor is ideal for pico basestation applications supporting single chip transceiver mode operation for lowest space and power dissipation.
TI also offers high speed data convertors and RF products for the radio front end such as ADS5500, DAC5687 and TRF3702.
Other products from TI include power management, timing, backplane interface and standard logic components.
TI's new pico basestation technology includes the TCI6482 DSP and highly optimised symbol rate and chip rate software libraries.
It will be available later this year.
