Reference design for wireless optical comms
A new technology from Texas Instruments dramatically cuts the cost and complexity of bringing the high-speed datarates of optical networking to end users.
The PTN04050A is a 6W, buck-boost, positive-to-negative convertor with a wide-range input voltage of 2.9 to 7V and an adjustable wide-output voltage of -3.3 to -15V.
The PTN04050C is a 12W boost module that features a 2.95 to 5.5V input voltage range and an adjustable wide-output voltage of 5 to 15V.
Both have an operating temperature of -40 to +85C and include overtemperature protection.
The easy-to-use modules offer a compact design solution and are available in surface-mount and through-hole packages.
The devices operate from either a standard 3.3 or 5V bus and can be used together to create plus and minus voltage rails required by many analogue ICs such as op amps and data convertors.
Their high efficiency, 84% for the PTN04050C and 88% for the PTN04050A, make them an excellent choice in many analogue circuit applications.
The latter also features on/off inhibit, undervoltage lockout and overcurrent protection.
The wide-range output voltage of the devices helps reduce customer inventory since one part can be used for a variety of applications.
The PTN04050A is well-suited for industrial controls, HVAC systems, test and measurement, medical instrumentation, marine and avionics, and AC/DC adapters.
Target applications for the PTN04050C include telecomms, industrial test and measurement, instrumentation, distributed power and general purpose circuits.
Both are effective for embedded applications in industrial and other challenging environments.
The PTN04050A and PTN04050C power modules are available now from TI and its authorised distributors.
Both devices are offered in surface-mount and through-hole packages measuring 22 x 12.4 x 8.3mm.
They are priced from $8.00 in 1000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).
