"A low bill of materials, small size, low power and high performance are fundamental requirements to drive A-GPS penetration in mobile phones, all of which TI delivers with the GPS5300 NaviLink 4.0 solution".
To speed time to market of NaviLink solution-based A-GPS mobile phones TI is also collaborating with Murata to deliver a module option to handset OEMs.
"We have been very impressed with the GPS5300 NaviLink single-chip GPS solution from TI.
We were able to develop the smallest A-GPS module in the industry today with great GPS performance just two weeks after we received samples", said Norio Nakajima, General Manager from Murata, one of the leading manufacturers of modules for mobile phones.
The GPS5300 is the first product in TI's NaviLink A-GPS family of solutions providing enhanced positioning capabilities for the handset.
The GPS5300 NaviLink 4.0 single chip uses TI's DRP technology and 90nm advanced process manufacturing to deliver: the industry's smallest discrete A-GPS solution with a board area less than 50mm2 for the complete system; the industry's lowest cost complete A-GPS system by delivering a total bill of materials that is over 50% less than existing GPS solutions; a low power solution with power management integrated on-chip, as well as direct connect to battery for easy incorporation into mobile phone designs; and a high performing A-GPS solution with rapid time to first fix (TTFF) from weak satellite signals exceeding the A-GPS performance requirements for 3GPP and 3GPP2 operation to enable users to get a fast pinpoint on their location.
"The mobile GPS semiconductor market is expected to exceed 180 million units in 2008 representing a large opportunity over the next several years to deliver location, navigation and safety features on mobile phones", said Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts.
"TI's NaviLink single chip is delivering the size, total cost and performance needed to drive A-GPS deployments in mobile phones".
The GPS5300 NaviLink 4.0 single chip is sampling now and is expected to be in production in 2Q 2006.
